Introduction
Developing the next Research Excellence Framework
Tuesday, 7th March 2017
Central London

Guest of Honour: a senior speaker confirmed from HEFCE
This seminar will discuss the future shape of the REF (Research Excellence Framework) ahead of its next cycle in 2021, and will be an opportunity to discuss proposals for the design of the next REF in the closing stages of HEFCE’s consultation.

The agenda includes a keynote contribution from a senior speaker confirmed from HEFCE and further senior participants are being contacted.

The conference follows the independent review of the REF which called for a broadening of the definition of impact, and for all active research staff in an institution to be submitted as part of the REF process, ending the portability of research outputs if an academic changes institution.

Delegates will discuss these possible changes as well as the consultation’s proposed measures designed to increase interdisciplinary research and to encourage open data - as well as greater use of metrics to inform assessment decisions and changes to the weighting of impact and research environment profiles.

We are delighted that a senior speaker confirmed from HEFCE has agreed to deliver a keynote address at this conference.

At this early stage, Dr Natalie Fenton, Professor of Media and Communications, Goldsmiths, University of London and Chair, MeCCSA (Media, Communication and Cultural Studies Association); Dr John Gathergood, Associate Professor in Economics, University of Nottingham and Author, Professorial salaries and research performance in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework and Katy McKen, Head of Research Information and Intelligence, University of Bath have also agreed to speak
