Cell Symposium: Next-Generation Materials for Energy Applications

Introduction
One of the world’s most pressing challenges is the need for clean, sustainable energy.  We have a limited timescale to implement sustainable energy solutions at a global scale to mitigate potentially catastrophic climate change and pollution.

Further, millions of people around the planet still lack access to reliable electricity. In 2015, the UN announced 17 Sustainable Development Goals, with Goal 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy for all – aiming to ensure universal clean energy for everyone by 2030.

To meet the energy challenge, there is a need for scientific and technological breakthroughs and advances with a clear pathway to real-world impact. Researchers around the world are responding, investigating sustainable and clean molecular and materials systems for energy generation and storage.

In this landmark Cell Symposium, “New Materials for Energy Applications,” leading international experts will come together to present and discuss the latest fundamental and applied research breakthroughs, spanning conceptual advances and outstanding performance results, in topics which include but are not limited to:

The Collaborative Innovation Center of Chemistry for Energy Materials (iChEM) was established jointly by Xiamen University (XMU), Fudan University (FDU), University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), and Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) under the guidance of the 2011-plan. In addition, many outstanding scholars from several well-known institutions and universities such as the Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter (FJIRSM) of CAS, the Institute of Chemistry of CAS, Tsinghua University, the University of Oxford, and the University of California-Berkeley (UC-Berkeley) have joined the center as affiliated collaborators. The mission of the consortium is to integrate key innovative elements from universities, research institutes, and enterprises in China and abroad. In addition, iChEM takes advantage of each of the four member institutions’ strengths in “chemistry and materials sciences” to further advance cutting-edge energy-related research while simultaneously offering invaluable training to promising and emerging young researchers, In doing so, iChEM is able to strengthen the extant research community and spur on new industry collaboration. At the end of 2014, the iChEM center received approval from the Ministry of Education (MOE) and Ministry of Finance (MOF) and was officially recognized as a national research center. It is the only “2011 Center” specializing in energy-chemistry and one of only two in China in the broader field of chemistry.
