Owner Societies
PCCP is run by an Ownership Board, on which all the member societies have equal representation. At the moment, there are sixteen participating societies, although more are expected to join the venture soon. The sixteen societies are the Deutsche Bunsen-Gesellschaft für Physikalische Chemie, Institute of Chemistry of Ireland, Israel Chemical Society, Kemisk Forening, Koninklijke Nederlandse Chemische Vereniging, Norsk Kjemisk Selskap, Polskie Towarzystwo Chemiczne, Real Sociedad Española de Química, Royal Society of Chemistry, Società Chimica Italiana, Suomen Kemian Seura - Kemisk Sällskapet I Finland, Svenska Kemistsamfundet, the Swiss Chemical Society, the Türkiye Kimya Dernegi, the Royal Australian Chemical Institute Incorporated and the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry.
The Royal Society of Chemistry is the learned society for chemistry and the professional body for chemists in the UK. Founded in 1892, there are 45,000 members world-wide, and any surplus from the sales of its products is used to support educational, scientific and professional activities in chemistry. Faraday Transactions (formerly Transactions of the Faraday Society), the international journal of physical chemistry and chemical physics, has been published by the Royal Society of Chemistry since 1904.
The Deutsche Bunsen-Gesellschaft für Physikalische Chemie originates from the Deutsche Elektrochemische Gesellschaft (founded in 1894) and is a non-profit making organisation dedicated to cultivating and promoting physical chemistry and its scientific and technical facets. The DBG has more than 1,800 members in higher education, industry and research institutes both in Germany and abroad. Berichte der Bunsen-Gesellschaft für Physikalische Chemie, the respected chemistry journal of the Deutsche Bunsen-Gesellschaft für Physikalische Chemie, has been in publication since 1894. PCCP has published a number of special issues containing papers from Deutsche Bunsen-Gesellschaft meetings, (Bunsentagungen and International Bunsen Discussion meetings).
The Institute of Chemistry of Ireland is the professional body representing chemists in Ireland. The present institute was founded in 1950 and has over 800 members.
The Israel Chemical Society (ICS) is dedicated to the advancement of pure and applied chemistry both within Israel and internationally. The ICS was formed in 1963, succeeding the "Chemists Association in Eretz-Israel" which had been established in 1933.
The Kemisk Forening is the chemical society for Denmark and comprises 7 different divisions.
The Koninklijke Nederlandse Chemische Vereniging is the professional organisation for chemists and chemical engineers in The Netherlands. Founded in 1903, the current membership is approximately 15,000.
The Norsk Kjemisk Selskap, the Norwegian Chemical Society was founded in 1893. The objective of the Society is to promote the interest and understanding of chemistry and chemical technology with respect to teaching and research.
The Polskie Towarzystwo Chemiczne was established in 1919 to encourage progress in the chemical sciences and spread chemical knowledge among the general public in Poland.
The Real Sociedad Española de Química is the professional organisation for Chemists in Spain. The Society comprises 21 specialist subject groups covering 13 regional sections.
The Società Chimica Italiana was founded in 1909, and is the chemical society for Italy. It has as its objective the dissemination of information on chemical science and its applications, and currently has approximately 5,000 members.
The Suomen Kemian Seura - Kemisk Sällskapet I Finland, the Association of Finnish Chemical Societies, was founded in 1970 and comprises three member societies: The Finnish Chemical Society (Suomalaisten Kemistien Seura 1919), The Finnish Society of Chemical Engineers (Kemiallisteknillinen Yhdistys - Kemisktekniska Föreningen 1970) and The Chemical Society of Finland (Finska Kemistsamfundet - Suomen Kemistiseura 1891).
The Svenska Kemistsamfundet, the Swedish Chemical Society, was founded in 1883 to promote the development of chemistry and its applications in Sweden. This non-profit organisation has 4,500 members with 6 different divisions.
The New Swiss Chemical Society was founded in 1992 following a merger of the Swiss Chemical Society (founded in 1901) and the Association of Swiss Chemists (founded in 1920). In 2001 it changed its name to the Swiss Chemical Society (SCS). The SCS has around 2200 members and represents chemistry in Switzerland and in international organisations.
The Türkiye Kimya Dernegi is the chemical society for Turkey and was founded in 1919.
The Royal Australian Chemical Institute Incorporated (RACI), founded in January 1917, is both the qualifying body in Australia for professional chemists and a learned society promoting the science and practice of chemistry. The RACI has over 6,000 members and was granted a Royal Charter in 1932, and it became an incorporated body in 2000. It is concerned with the teaching and practice of chemistry and with the application of chemistry in industry, academia and government authorities.
The New Zealand Institute of Chemistry (NZIC) represents some 1000 members involved in the profession of chemistry in New Zealand. Members participate in the study, practice, teaching, promotion and management of chemistry. The NZIC was founded in 1931 and is comprised of six branches and a number of specialist groups.
