Nanoparticles of photonic Cu, Ag and Cd sulfides were synthesized by a general novel green synthetic route using the biopolymer dextran at high molecular weight or as crosslinked beads. The enzyme dextranase released the nanoparticles, resulting materials ranged in size from 9–50 nm depending on conditions. UV–vis showed excellent absorption characteristics and the possible mechanisms of this novel biopolymer stabilisation of metal sulfides are discussed.

Nanoscale assembly of high-temperature oxidation-resistant nanocomposites
Xiao Peng,
Nanoscale, 2010, 2, 262
DOI: 10.1039/b9nr00118b

Nanocomposites which integrate a certain amount of Cr and/or Al nanoparticles with a nanocrystalline metal matrix are oxidation-resistant during oxidation at high temperatures, because of the combined nanosize effects of the particles and metal-matrix grains on the promoted formation of a protective scale of chromia or alumina.
