He received the Raffaello Nasini Prize from the Italian Society of Chemistry in 1988 for his studies on solid state dynamic processes, and the FEDERCHIMICA Prize for 1995 for his research on the intermolecular interactions in organometallic systems. His current research interests are in molecular crystal engineering and materials chemistry. In particular, he is interested in the synthesis of functionalised organometallic building blocks and in their utilization in solid-gas and solid-solid reactions, in the study of hydrogen bonding interactions between ions, and in the investigation of crystal polymorphism. He has published about 300 scientific papers and reviews. He has been Visiting Professor at the University of Strasbourg and recipient of a number of international bilateral research projects. He has been a member of the Dalton Council and of the editorial board of Dalton Trans. He is Scientific Editor of CrystEngComm and member of the international editorial board of Chem Comm.
