Dwayne Heard
Dwayne Heardwas born in Barnstaple, North Devon. He has been Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry at the University of Leeds since 2004, and is currently the Head of the School of Chemistry. He graduated with a BA (Hons.) and MA in Chemistry from Magdalen College, Oxford in 1986, and a DPhil. in physical chemistry at Oxford in 1990. He then took up a postdoctoral fellowship at SRI International (1990-1991) and became a lecturer at Macquarie University, Sydney (1992-1993) before joining Leeds, as a Royal Society University Research Fellow (1994-2002), Senior Lecturer (2000) and Reader (2002). His research interests include the field measurement and modelling of short-lived free-radicals in the atmosphere from surface- and aircraft-based platforms, in particular OH, HO2 and IO, using laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectroscopy at low pressure (FAGE), and the study of the reaction kinetics and photochemistry of important molecules in the atmosphere. Dwayne is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Chairman of the RSC Faraday Division Standing Committee on Conferences (which oversees Faraday Discussions), a member of Faraday Council, and former Chairman of the RSC Gas Kinetics Group (2004-5). He is currently a commissioning editor with Chemical Society Reviews, was Chair and Editor of Faraday Discussions 130 on Atmospheric Chemistry, and was theme leader for Energy and Environment at the RSC organised IUPAC Congress held in Glasgow in 2009.
