Chemical misconceptions : prevention, diagnosis and cure

Chemical misconceptions Volume 1Chemical misconceptions Volume 2

Chemistry is a conceptual subject and, in order to explain many of these concepts, models are used to describe and explain the microscopic world and relate it to the macroscopic properties of matter.

As students progress in chemistry the models they use change and many contradict their everyday experiences and use of language. This resource is in two parts; Volume 1 covers the theoretical background and is designed to explain some of the misconceptions students have, Volume 2 is designed to provide some strategies for dealing with some of the misconceptions that students have in the form of ready to use classroom resources.

It is hoped that teachers will see the benefit of a constructivist approach and find that the student material leads to a good theoretical underpinning of the fundamentals of chemistry.
