On This Day In Chemistry

April 9th

American chemist Frank Albert Cotton was born on this day in 1930

As well as being the youngest person to receive full professorship at MIT at only 31 years of age, he was the pioneer of studying multiple bonding between transition metal atoms. This research began with rhenium (Re) halides and in 1964 he discovered the quadruple bond in the Re2Cl82− ion.
