American inventor Frederick Gardner Cottrell was born on this day in 1877

Cottrell was a physical chemist who invented a way to remove particles such as smoke or lead oxides (Pb_xO_y) from the air. This electrostatic precipitator is still in use as an efficient method for reducing air pollution.
