This activity is designed for students aged 14-16 as an introduction to demonstrate folding and faulting of layers of rock, caused by lateral pressure (linked to plate tectonics). The activity (which can be done as a demonstration or as a class experiment) simulates thefolding of rock layers by compressing layers of different powders (representing different rocks) in a transparent tank or box.
