Microscale oxidation of cyclohexanol by potassium dichromate(VI)

Use this quick class experiment to observe the oxidation of cyclohexanol to produce cyclohexanone. Includes kit list and safety instructions.

In this practical, students place a pool of acidified potassium dichromate(VI) in a Petri dish. After adding a few drops of cyclohexanol to this pool, they can see clear signs of the oxidation reaction taking place as cyclohexanone is formed.
