Commercial Skills for Chemists: Finance

This module asks teams of students to assess the financial impacts of two projects with a chemical background. This resource provides all the information necessary to run the Finance module.  It contains a Tutor guide, Student presentation, a video lecture and several Excel templates of tutorial exercises for students

It is a good idea, but not essential, that the students have already completed the module on Innovation, where the case studies are introduced.

Learning outcomes: Students should learn and retain the distinction between income and expenditure and between revenue and capital budgets. They should understand the different types of cost – fixed and variable and be able to assign costs into these categories. They should be able to prepare a simple project budget, if appropriate using discounted cash flow (DCF) methods to value future income streams.
