Extracting iodine from seaweed

Description

Ribbon seaweeds (sp. laminaria) contain iodine compounds which they obtain by extracting iodide ions from seawater. In this demonstration seaweed is heated in the air to an ash. The iodide produced must then be oxidised to iodine and recovered by solvent extraction and evaporation.
