2019 Chemical Sciences Apprentice of the Year Winner
Mr William Ashworth
Awarded for outstanding contributions to a range of activities, including developing and validating a novel Self Accelerating Decomposition Temperature Screening tool.
I was born and raised in Cheadle Hulme and was educated locally, attending Cheadle Hulme High School (CHHS). After completing A-Levels in Chemistry, Maths and Biology at CHHS Sixth Form, I began my Apprenticeship with AstraZeneca, Macclesfield in September 2017.
I joined the Process Safety Group, quickly becoming an active member of the team contributing to a variety of laboratory experiments. I am often entrusted with the explosivity screening tests, the validation of new instruments and equipment and the calibration checks / recalibration of current instruments, constantly learning new techniques and skills. Alongside this, I am working towards my FdSc in Chemical Science, studying with Manchester Metropolitan University.
One of the main projects I have been involved with has been the development of a tool to determine the Self-Accelerating Decomposition Temperature in different substances to screen for self-reactivity. This will further enhance the safety measurements my team can provide for storage and transport of potentially hazardous materials and is highly valued in the group.
