GCMS Training: A Hands on Approach Ethiopia 2021

8 - 12 November 2021, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Introduction
After careful consideration of the continuously evolving situation with COVID-19, we have made the decision to host the GCMS in Ethiopia on the 8 November 2021. The courses are very important to us, however given the latest health news and travel restrictions that delegates are experiencing we have made the difficult decision to accept applications only from Ethiopia for this course at this time.

The selection process for applicants will still be going ahead, and all delegates will be contacted and an announcement made as soon as the selection is made.

Please contact us at events@rsc.org if you have any questions.

This workshop is supported by GSK as part of our five-year partnership to enhance the capabilities of African scientists in modern analytical techniques. We will train more than 400 African scientists by the end of 2020, as well as training Local Trainers to train others, leaving a self-sustaining programme and a lasting legacy.

The Pan Africa Chemistry Network was set up by the Royal Society of Chemistry to advance the chemical sciences across Africa by building a self-sustaining science base. This expanded analytical science training programme will develop your practical analytical techniques to solve local challenges and contribute to global scientific knowledge.

Applications are invited for the above training course; we welcome applications from researchers, lecturers, technicians, MSc students and PhD students in the chemical sciences.

The training course will cover the practical aspects of Gas Chromatography, method development, quantitative analysis and spectral interpretation of GC-MS.  This course has been independently verified through peer review and formally approved by Royal Society of Chemistry to be of high quality and suitable for professional development of chemical scientists.

Applications

Places are limited to 15 delegates only. Application deadline 27 September 2021 If you already applied to the course in 2020, you do not need to apply again as your application will be carried over.

Delegates who have attended a previous PACN GC-MS course in Kenya, Ethiopia, Nigeria or Ghana are not eligible to attend again.  This is a repeat of the course.

Selection Criteria

The participants will be selected based upon the information provided in your application, against the published selection criteria:
  • All participants should have a HND or BSc (or equivalent) in the chemical sciences, thus demonstrating suitable background knowledge
  • Participants can be MSc students, PhD students, lecturers, researchers, professors or technical staff. A range of experience levels in each course is preferred.
  • Demonstrable benefit to research or teaching in your home institution
  • Strong relevance to your current or planned research or teaching area
  • Potential impact upon the individual’s experience and career prospects
  • Immediate application of the techniques learnt
  • Access to equipment in your home country will be considered
  • Benefit to home institution and the wider chemistry community in your country
To apply please use the link in this section, you must:
  • Complete the required online application form
  • Upload a current CV (maximum length of 2 pages)
  • Upload a letter of introduction and recommendation from one referee (for students only)
Delegates will be selected from the information provided in your application form.  Please click on the link at the top of this page to complete your application.  All applications must be received by the published deadline and we do not accept applications by email.

Please note – we receive high number of applications for these courses. So, please take your time to consider your answers to the questions in the form, as this will be the basis for your acceptance/rejection.

Enquiries may be sent to Mrs Ellie Peters, Royal Society of Chemistry (peterse@rsc.org).

Accommodation

This will be provided for all delegates, including food.  All delegates and trainers will be staying in a guest house close to the University.
Speakers
Dr Estifanos Ele, Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia

Dr. Estifanos Ele received his BSc and MSc from Addis Ababa University and was a lecturer, and later a head department of Chemical Education, Addis Ababa University. He obtained his PhD from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, and was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Saskatchewan in the group of Prof. M. S. C. Pedras. Currently he is a faculty member of the Department of Chemistry and Director for teaching-learning support office of Addis Ababa University.

He is also a volunteer regional trainer of GCMS training organized and supported by RSC/PACS.

His research focuses on:
● Bio-assay guided isolation of bioactive compounds from natural sources
● Isolation and characterization of plant chemical defences (phytoalexins and phytoanticipins) and their biosynthetic pathway study, and synthesis of biosynthetic precursors.
● Analysis of trace organic contaminants in the environment (from waste water, factory discharges, effluents, fruit, vegetables etc.)

Dr Minaleshewa Atlabachew, Bahir Dar University, Ethiopia

Dr. Minaleshewa Atlabachew graduated with B.Ed in Chemistry from Bahir Dar University, Ethiopia in 2004, M.Sc and PhD in Analytical Chemistry from Addis Ababa University in 2007 and 2013 respectively. Before he left for his M.Sc study, he was a graduate assistant at Bahir Dar University in 2004/2005. In 2007, he returned to Bahir Dar University to be a Lecturer in Analytical Chemistry in the Chemistry Department and was promoted to assistant Professor in 2013. From 2013 to 2015 he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria, South Africa. He subsequently returned to Bahir Dar University, Ethiopia as assistant professor of analytical chemistry and then promoted to an associate professor in 2017. In addition to his position at the department of Chemistry, He served as Directorate head of the central laboratories management at Blue Nile water Institute of the Bahir Dar University for two years since 2016. Currently he is the laboratory manager of the college of science, chair of analytical chemistry stream and member of the local GC-MS trainers’ volunteer group organized by RSC and PACN.

Minaleshewa Atlabachew’s research spans the development of modern sample preparation techniques for bioactive molecules investigation and extensive use of the advanced analytical techniques like Spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques
together with multivariate data analysis for various applications.
