Bullying and harassment can be difficult to talk about – especially within your own workplace. That is why we have launched a support line for our chemical sciences community.

Incidences of discrimination, bullying, harassment and exclusionary behaviour were found to be widespread by our research on both women’s retention and progression, and LGBT+ physical scientists’ experiences of the workplace.

We are committed to helping eliminate these behaviours from our community. As part of our response, we’ve launched this bullying and harassment support line.

This support line is for everyone working in the chemical sciences who has been in any way affected by workplace bullying or harassing behaviour.

We have also released an animation introducing the key concepts surrounding bullying and harassment in the workplace, to help promote understanding and raise awareness of these issues.

Ale Palermo from the Royal Society of Chemistry said: "We are proud to be offering this service for our community – but in an ideal world it would not be necessary. From our research, we understand that every experience of bullying and harassment is personal, and we hope that our support line can contribute toward the chemical sciences having a welcoming environment where everyone can achieve their potential."

Karen Salt, UKRI’s Acting Deputy Director of Culture and Environment, said: "It is great to see the Royal Society of Chemistry taking clear action to tackle bullying and harassment by launching a telephone support line to offer much needed assistance to those affected."
