cOAlition S recognises Molecular Systems Design & Engineering as a Transformative Journal
Molecular Systems Design & Engineering (MSDE) is now approved as a “Transformative Journal” with cOAlition S, an international consortium of research funding and performing organisations.
Jointly owned by the Institution of Chemical Engineers and the Royal Society of Chemistry, MSDE joins the ranks of our wholly owned titles that achieved Transformative Journals status last year. This is the first step we are taking to realise our ambition of converting our entire hybrid portfolio to 100% Open Access within five years, as was announced in our recent commitment.
Dr Sam Keltie, Royal Society of Chemistry Publisher, said: “For MSDE to have Transformative Journals status is good news for the researchers this journal serves, working at the interface of chemistry and chemical engineering.
"I’m proud to say this makes the journal an even more inclusive venue, as it now provides a compliant route to publishing OA for authors whose institutions are cOAlition S signatories, whether or not they have a transformative deal with the RSC.”
Institution of Chemical Engineers Director, Learned Society, Claudia Flavell-While, added: "I am delighted that Molecular Systems Design and Engineering has been given transformative status, which obliges us to increasing the share of open access content published in this journal. We are seeing increasing interest in open access publishing across our journals and IChemE is very happy to support this growing trend. As a transformative journal, MSDE will be compliant with cOAlitionS requirements, making it easier for authors from the UK, EU and the US – key communities in molecular systems – to publish in this journal."
What is 'transformative status' for journals?
A Transformative Journal is a hybrid journal that is actively committed to transitioning to a fully Open Access journal.
A Transformative Journal must:
- increase the share of Open Access content year on year
- achieve an absolute growth in open access articles of 5% per year, or a relative growth of 15% year-on-year, whichever is more challenging for the journal)
- offset subscription income from payments for publishing services (to avoid double payments, known as ‘double dipping’)
- commit to flip to full Open Access as soon as possible, and in any event once 75% of the research content is published open access.
