University of Cyprus joins our Open Access community after striking 'RSC Platinum' agreement
The Royal Society of Chemistry is happy to announce an innovative new agreement with the University of Cyprus, marking our first Open Access deal in the country.
The RSC Platinum deal will cover an initial one-year period and expand Open Access provision for authors affiliated with the university.
RSC Platinum means full reading access and ensures no author affiliated with the University of Cyprus will face publishing charges in any of our journals, including Gold OA. This deal means the university is one the first institutions to sign up for RSC Platinum, following Germany's TIB – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology and University Library earlier this year.
The University of Cyprus's chemistry department’s intensive research activities are aimed at applications in important fields such as health, energy, and the environment. They have also led to a significant production of research publications and successes in national and international research programs.
Royal Society of Chemistry Head of Open Access Sara Bosshart said: “We are proud to welcome Cyprus for the first time, joining the growing number of countries with whom we have an RSC Open Access agreement. Open Access is at the core of our mission to help the chemical sciences make the world a better place and a crucial part of that is providing unrestricted global access to all of the cutting-edge research we publish."
The Department of Chemistry of the University of Cyprus (UCY) team explain that it is the only chemistry department in Cyprus and has created modern undergraduate and postgraduate programs compatible with the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).
They said: "The Department of Chemistry faculty are very active in cutting-edge research fields of organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry, that include chemical biology, supramolecular chemistry, coordination chemistry, molecular spectroscopy, heterogenous catalysis, computational, polymer and food chemistry.
"The agreement of UCY Library with the Royal Society of Chemistry that allows free of charge open access publications in RSC journals is very important for the UCY Chemistry Department faculty members, since it will improve significantly the visibility of the research work conducted in the department and UCY in general."
