Embracing diversity and inclusion for better science
By Royal Society of Chemistry Chief Executive, Dr Helen Pain
Events in the UK over the past week have been shocking, with our colleagues, their friends and relatives deeply affected by scenes of violence, hatred and an underlying message of division.
Scientific endeavour is aided by a diversity of thought, approach and experience, and we will continue to celebrate and support our diverse global community.
Science doesn’t operate in a vacuum and those who seek to damage the fabric of society in the UK directly affect the perceptions of those considering whether to forge a life here, making their own contribution to scientific advancements.
We stand on the side of respect and kindness, and in solidarity with anyone who has been affected by these events – particularly those from ethnic minority backgrounds who are feeling threatened based on their race or religion.
We will continue to work to make science as open, inclusive and diverse as it should be, calling out inequality and tackling discrimination, for the good of society and to build a truly inclusive world.
