Chemistry for kids at 'Imagine That'
Chemistry Week 2018
Liverpool Local Section celebrated the end of Chemistry Week in collaboration with the city’s ‘Imagine That’ childrens’ play centre.
On Saturday 24 November members of the Liverpool Local Section ran hands-on chemistry workshops for children aged 4–11 at the ‘Imagine That’ childrens’ play centre in Wavertree. In addition to all the usual activities in the Science Zone, children got stuck into doing safe and simple experiments with:
- Custard gloop
- Alginate gummies
- Colourful Chemistry of visible and invisible inks
- Lava lamps and glow sticks
We lost count of the number who participated in total, but it included a significant number of local section members and their families. Making custard gloop and alginate gummies seemed to be so much more successful when in the hands of youngsters than professional chemists! There were the inevitable difficult questions posed by the children like – "how does that work?" or "what's happening here?", but hopefully we inspired many taking part that science and chemistry in particular is a huge amount of fun!
Chemistry Week
Chemistry Week is an annual celebration of the chemical sciences, centred around our members sharing their passion with public audiences. In 2018 it took place from 19–25 November, and the theme was 'Chemistry for Everyone'. Members were able to apply for grants from our Outreach Fund to organise activities.
