Lifetime achievement award
Dr Bimal Krishna Banik CChem FRSC, Vice President of Research and Education Development of Community Health System of South Texas, has been chosen for the 2018 Life Time Achievement Award by the Indian Chemical Society (ICS).
Dr Banik has demonstrated significant accomplishments in research, teaching, mentoring, advising and administration very consistently and persistently for many years. He was a tenured full professor and First President’s Endowed Professor at the University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA). Dr Banik has received multiple NIH, NCI and private research foundation grants. He has published and presented extensively. For example, he has approximately 828 papers, patents, book chapters, reviews, perspectives, editorials, presentations and commentaries. He has initiated new and novel research on anticancer beta lactams and polyaromatic compounds. In addition he has been deeply involved in other areas including catalysis, natural products and microwave-induced reactions.
On receiving the award Dr Banik says, "I am thrilled that people have noticed my efforts in diverse areas of higher education that benefit the society in many ways."
Dr Edwin LeMaster, Dean (retired) of the College of Science and Engineering and Professor Emeritus, at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, says: "I am delighted to learn that Dr Banik is receiving this award. His professional productivity, his outstanding mentoring of students from high school age to postdoctoral and his service to his professional societies are second to no other faculty member while he served in our university."
Professor Dulal Mukherjee, the President of Indian Chemical Society says: "The Indian Chemical Society was established in 1924 with Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray, the doyen of Chemistry in India as its founder President. This Award instituted in 1999 is prestigious and competitive, and open to famous scientists throughout the world. For his excellence in teaching, research, mentoring and administrative activities in the USA, Dr. Banik has received many awards and honours. It is particularly a matter of pride and privilege that the Indian Chemical Society has been able to recognize the erudition of this great personality whose scholastic research and dedicated teaching have earned him several distinctions and awards throughout the world in the field of chemical sciences. I feel sure that this award would further inspire him to take up new challenges in the field of his research, teaching and related academic affairs with renewed vigor."
