Deadline: 30 May 2025
Guest Editors: Jennifer Dunn, Northwestern University
Juliana Segura-Salazar, University of Queensland

This gold open-access themed collection aims to highlight the environmental impact of mining and recycling of minerals and metals from batteries, welcoming papers at the social-environmental science interface.

We hope to attract submissions in the following areas for this collection:

  • Health implications of mining activities on local populations, including air and water quality impacts
  • Biodiversity impacts of mining and recycling activities
  • Comparisons of environmental effects of deep sea mining and land-based mining
  • Environmentally friendly strategies to reduce material demand and requirements
  • Case studies of best practices in mining management for low emissions
  • Circular economy and systems approaches to minimising negative environmental and social effects of the minerals supply chain
  • Policy and governance in relation to the social and environmental impacts of mining and recycling activities
  • Methods and data for quantifying nature positive mining in the planning stages and during actual reclamation
  • Papers considering environmental justice

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • How PFAS materials enter our environmental systems
  • Development of alternative materials
  • Methods of contamination prevention
  • Human exposure and toxicity
  • How PFAS contaminants enter our eco systems
  • The effect of PFAS of natural systems
  • Remediation and recovery of damaged and polluted soils
  • Water remediation methods for PFAS removal
