Dominic Tildesley received his degree from Southampton University in 1973 and a DPhil from Oxford in 1976. After five years as a postdoctoral fellow at Penn State, Cornell and Oxford Universities he returned to Southampton as Lecturer, Reader, then Professor of Theoretical Chemistry until 1996. In 1996-98 he was Professor of Computational Chemistry at Imperial College, London.

His work in industry has enabled him to create interdisciplinary innovations involving chemistry, materials science, life sciences and engineering. He has encouraged strong programmes of external research working with universities and SME's in an open and long-term way and has tried to stay close to his academic roots by teaching, publication and working with chemistry departmental advisory boards. He has also been able to gain an appreciation of the growth of science in China and India over the last ten years.
Dominic retired from Uniliever in June 2012. He is currently researching at the University of Blaise Pascal, Clermont Ferrand France and will take up a new role as director of CECAM (Centre Europeen de Catcul Atomique et Moleculaire) from January 2013 based at the EDFL in Lausanne, Switzerland.
