Course description

This 2-day course covers the fundametals of GC-MS as well as operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of an Agilent 5975 Mass Spectrometer.

We begin with an introduction to GC-MS followed by a general instrument overview covering both the GC and GC-MS hardware configuration. We then explain the need for a vacuum and the types of pumps for a two stage vacuum system; types of ionisation (such as electron and positive and negative chemical ionisation) and the ionisation source; the working principle of a quadrupole mass analyser and the spectra produced; and finally, the high energy dynode & electron multiplier detector.
Moving into the lab we train delegates to perform regular maintenance on the hardware to ensure the smooth running of the instrument focusing on tunes & diagnostics, GC considerations and the mass spectral system. We also cover the principles of troubleshooting by examining the effects of faults in the system.

At the end of the course you will have gained knowledge and experience of operating an Agilent GC-MS for method development and sample analysis. You will also have learned how to maintain the GC-MS instrument to preserve its performance.

This course is also applicable for older versions of Agilent GC-MS instrumentation.

Pre-requisites

This course is suitable for all levels of knowledge; however for complete beginners it is advisable to attend the Absolute Basics of GC & GC-MS first to get a good basic overview and to have attended hands-on training on an Agilent GC.
