Course description

This is a virtual classroom-based course covering the basic theory of Liquid Chromatography and its related techniques including liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS).

This course is taught live in a virtual classroom through interactive, instructor-led training with instrument parts and consumables shown and explained. Small group sizes with plenty of opportunities to ask questions through live Q&A.

A short practical is used to demonstrate the principles of chromatography and this is referred to during subsequent presentations and discussions.

The course consists of 5 major topics which focuses on the What? How? Why? Where? and When? of HPLC & LC-MS.

What? – Gives an explanation of what Liquid Chromatography is and the types of chromatography techniques used. This section then covers the definitions of both Liquid Chromatography & Mass Spectrometry, looks at the instrumentation used by these techniques and the technical terms commonly used. This provides a firm foundation to then understand how chromatography works.

How? – This section gives delegates the understanding of how the separation process occurs followed by the identification of the individual instrument components such as pumps, injectors, inlets, columns & detectors (including mass selective detectors). For each component delegates are given a basic understanding of the function and operation of that component.

Why? – This section details why liquid chromatography and LC-MS is used and looks at qualitative and quantitative data analysis. The use of external and internal calibration standards are also covered.

When? – This section looks at the importance of preparing samples for analysis and the considerations of preparing raw samples for introducing into the LC system, taking into account the physical states and sampling location. Sample preparation techniques including Solid phase extraction and Liquid-liquid extraction are discussed as well as filtration.

Where? – This section looks at a number of industries where HPLC/LC-MS and the previously discussed sampling techniques are used. Knowledge gained from the previous sections is confirmed by reviewing various applications of HPLC and LC-MS and identifying the reasons why the particular techniques were chosen.

At the end of the course the delegate will have basic knowledge of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry and related terminology. They will have an understanding of sampling techniques, solvents, sample introduction techniques, columns and LC detectors or mass spectrometers.

This course provides a good foundation for attending any of the Anthias Complete and Comprehensive HPLC & LC-MS courses.
