ISF-2021 Young Conference

26 - 27 July 2021, United Kingdom

Introduction
Welcome to the webpage for the ISF-2021 Young conference. The online conference, immediately preceding the main ISF-2021 conference, is for all students, post-docs and all early-career researchers interested in solar fuels.

The Young conference aims to give as many young researchers as possible the opportunity to present through oral presentations, flash presentations, and poster sessions. The conference will also include keynote talks from mentoring experts, networking opportunities with speakers and with peers, and careers advice from RSC careers specialists.

On behalf of the Young organising committee, we encourage you to join us at the conference and we look forward to meeting you online in July 2021.

Conference Co-chairs
Nolwenn Gueguen, INRAE
Holly-Jayne Redman, Uppsala Universitet

Themes

The programme will explore all aspects of direct solar fuel production, combining biological, molecular and solid state approaches. Abstracts for oral or poster presentations are welcomed from students, post-docs and all early-career researchers. The main themes include:
  • Multi-electron/multi-proton catalysis (homogeneous, heterogeneous, enzymatic and bioinspired processes)
  • Light-harvesting and light-driven processes
  • Photoelectrochemistry
  • Photobiological approaches
  • Metabolic engineering
  • Devices and demonstration: robustness, sustainability and upscale

Attendance

The Royal Society of Chemistry is keen to encourage and enable as many people as possible to attend our events, to benefit from the networking opportunities and the chance to hear talks from leaders in the field. If you would like to discuss accessibility, please contact us to discuss your requirements so that we can enable your attendance.

Online networking

13:10 (BST), Monday 26 July
The Career and Professional Development team at the Royal Society of Chemistry have provided a webinar that gives an overview of the importance of networking for your career, and provides some top tips, alongside guidance on getting the best out of the online conference platform. We recommend watching this ahead of the event.

Complementing the webinar, there will be a facilitated networking session in the first break on Day 1. This will be an opportunity for you to socialise with other delegates and familiarise yourself with how the networking rooms work on InEvent. Please join this session, make new connections, and find out how to get the most out of the online platform.

RSC Careers team, drop in

13:10 (BST), Monday 26 July
Meet the RSC Career Management team of specialist chemistry career advisers and understand more about how we can help you plan the next step of your career. Want to finetune your CV, or work out what you want to do with your life? Ask us anything!

Ask the plenary speaker

16:40 (BST), Monday 26 July
In this informal session, plenary speaker Dr Shelley D. Minteer will answer questions and offer advice from their experience as an established researcher. Topics will include (but are not limited to): achieving/maintaining a work/life balance; grant and paper writing tips; choosing and making the most of the right opportunities; starting and leading a research group; things she wishes she'd known as an early career researcher; and moving to and working in a different research environment. Questions on these and other themes are welcome!

Careers in chemistry

14:20 (BST), Tuesday 27 July
Ideal for PhD students or postdocs who are considering their options both inside and outside of academic research. This session will help you understand what you have to offer to employers based on your career to date, and how to successfully, take their next career step.

CV Consultations
