Exam results day 2026: your future in chemistry starts here

Few subjects let you create an impact quite like chemistry. Whether it’s developing medicines that save lives, the clean technologies combatting climate change, or new materials powering the next wave of innovation, there are so many ways chemical scientists can contribute to the future of our society and the planet.

It's not just chemists who see it that way, too. The UK Government has identified life sciences, clean energy and other chemistry-powered industries as central to the country's economic future, recognition of just how valued these skills are. Chemistry is doing its bit for the UK economy, with 46% of chemistry professionals fitting into one of these sectors.

In fact, chemistry graduates are even more likely to wind up in one of these priority fields, with almost half of all chemistry graduates (49%) going straight into careers in these areas. A career in the chemical sciences is one where even early-career professionals can make a difference on day one and work on problems that industry, academia, the government and others believe really matter.

Chemistry skills are used across lots of careers and industries, so there is plenty of opportunity to explore and find your passion. Some chemists work in industry, inventing the products and materials used by billions of people every day. Others pursue academia, using research to tackle the world's biggest challenges. Policy, education, law and a wide array of other sectors exist for those who would prefer to use their chemistry knowledge in a different way.

Plenty take their chemistry skills somewhere you might not expect — recent graduates have gone on to become laboratory scientists, teachers, management consultants, business analysts, even chartered accountants.

From labs and factories to hospitals, boardrooms and classrooms, chemistry skills turn up in more places than you'd expect – so wherever your interests lie, there's very likely a way to bring chemistry with you. We even have a career quiz that can help you find your niche.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to getting into chemistry so you can explore your options and find the one that most suits you.

For some, heading to university is the best choice – chemistry degrees are among the most versatile out there, opening doors into research, industry and far beyond.

For others, an apprenticeship offers a way to earn while you learn, combining a wage with a recognised qualification and hands-on experience from day one.

And if you’re ready to start working straightaway, many employers offer trainee schemes and entry-level roles that welcome school and college leavers and help you build your skills on the job.
