Biography

Beatriz Fernández obtained her PhD at the University of Oviedo (Spain), where she conducted research in the group of Professor Alfredo Sanz-Medel, focusing on depth profile analysis of solid samples using glow discharge sources. She subsequently completed a postdoctoral fellowship at IPREM (CNRS, France), where she gained extensive experience in the development of analytical methodologies for the determination of heteroatoms in solid samples using solid-state techniques, particularly LA-ICP-MS, XPS, GD-OES, and AFM. Since September 2008, she has been affiliated with the Department of Physical and Analytical Chemistry at the University of Oviedo, where she currently holds the position of Full Professor. In addition to her extensive background in spatially resolved analytical techniques, in recent years she has expanded her research interests to emerging areas, including the synthesis of nanoparticles as labels for protein determination in complex biological samples. To address the analytical challenges associated with the analysis of cultured cells, tissue sections, and extracellular vesicles, she has developed innovative strategies that combine nanoparticle synthesis, immunoprobe design, and advanced single-cell and LA-ICP-MS methodologies. To date, she has authored 92 research articles and 8 book chapters and has directly supervised 8 PhD students and numerous Master’s students. Since 2022, she has served as Secretary of the Spanish Society of Analytical Chemistry.
