Biography

Elke Debroye obtained her Master’s degree in Chemistry from KU Leuven in 2009 and completed a PhD in bio-inorganic chemistry at KU Leuven in 2013. She subsequently pursued postdoctoral research in materials science at the Laboratory for Photochemistry and Spectroscopy, focusing on semiconductor materials and their structure–function relationships, including advanced spectroscopic and single-particle microscopy techniques. During this time, she undertook research stays with Prof. Liz-Marzán (San Sebastián), Prof. Majima (Osaka University), and Prof. Bonn (MPI Mainz).

In October 2021, she established her independent research group at the Department of Chemistry, KU Leuven (www.debroyegroup.com). Her research focuses on developing advanced spectroscopy and microscopy methods to investigate the photophysics of (in)organic semiconductors, particularly metal halide perovskites. By combining structural and time-resolved optical characterization, her group uncovers fundamental photophysical processes and translates these insights into improved optoelectronic device performance, supporting applications such as LEDs and energy conversion technologies. She was awarded an ERC Starting Grant in 2023.
