Biography
Professor Marc D. Porosoff is an associate professor in the Department of Chemical and Sustainability Engineering at the University of Rochester. Marc earned his B.S. at Johns Hopkins (2009) and Ph.D. at Columbia University (2015), both in Chemical Engineering. He was a National Research Council postdoctoral associate at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington DC from 2015-2017. He joined the University of Rochester in 2017 and was promoted to Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering in 2024. Marc leads a research program on catalyst development for sustainable conversion of CO2 into value-added products. His group integrates synthesis and in situ characterization with emerging techniques that leverage AI and novel mechanisms of energy transfer. Marc’s group has published over 20 peer-reviewed papers on catalysts for CO2 conversion to value-added chemicals and fuels. He is recognized as a leader in this field, evidenced by his role organizing symposia on CO2 upgrading at major conferences (American Chemical Society 2022 and AIChE 2023). Marc’s innovative work has attracted significant support with funded grants from ACS, DOE, NSF, and DOD. Beyond the lab, Marc is deeply invested in outreach and education. He co-hosts and runs the podcast “PodCAT,” which has released 47 episodes and garnered over 13,000 downloads.
