Biography

Nicholas Dunne is a Full Professor of Biomaterials Engineering, Deputy Dean for the Faculty of Engineering and Computing, and Founding Executive Director of Biodesign Europe at Dublin City University. Trained in polymer science and biomaterials his research lies at the interface of materials science, engineering and biology, with a focus on drug-biomaterial combination medical devices for hard and soft tissue repair and regeneration.

He has authored more than 300 peer‑reviewed publications spanning biomaterials design, medical device development and translational orthopaedic applications. His group develops stratified approaches to the design, manufacture and characterisation of biomaterials and medical devices, linking studies of host–material interactions with preclinical and translational work in musculoskeletal repair, wound healing and cancer therapies, and has contributed to patented delivery technologies that have supported university spin‑outs in peptide-based nucleic acid delivery and orthopaedic devices.

Professor Dunne is an elected Fellow of Biomaterials Science and Engineering by the International Union of Societies of Biomaterials Science and Engineering (IUSBSE), and a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, and is a Chartered Engineer. He has held leadership roles in the European Society for Biomaterials and is currently the President of ESB, having previously held other roles, including Journal Liaison Officer and Communication Officer. Prof Dunne has also played key organisational roles in major international biomaterials meetings, including the 11th World Biomaterials Congress and the 8th China-Europe Symposium on Biomaterials in Regenerative Medicine, alongside directing interdisciplinary research centres and large collaborative international-funded research programmes spanning academia, industry and clinical partners.
