Biography
Sen Xin received his doctoral degree in Physical Chemistry in 2013. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher from 2015 to 2019, in the group of Prof. John Bannister Goodenough at the University of Texas at Austin, where he focused on the electrode materials and solid electrolytes for rechargeable alkali-metal batteries.
In 2019, he started his independent research as a full professor at the Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He showed a broad interest on the high-energy rechargeable Li/Na batteries, solid-state Li-metal batteries, battery interfacial chemistry, battery thermal safety, and stable isotope effects on battery chemistry. Targeted at building the beyond-500-Wh/kg rechargeable metal-chalcogen batteries, he proposed to stabilise the energy storage electrochemistry versus Li and Na of chalcogen cathodes by confining the reaction in subnanometer-sized pores, and revealed at the subatomic scale, the positive influence of the minor sulfur-34 isotope on improving the reversibility and kinetics of Li-S reaction. He designed solid composite electrolytes that simultaneously feature high Li+ conductivity, high (electro)chemical stability and flame retardancy, and build high performance, intrinsically safe solid-state Li-metal batteries from them. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers with a total citation of >32,000 times and an H-index of 91, and honored by Clarivate the “Highly Cited Researcher” from the year 2019 to 2024.
He was awarded ACS Energy and Fuels Raising Stars (2025), Excellence Prize for CAS “Hundred Talents Project” Final Assessment (2023), Chinese Chemical Society Prize for Young Scientists (2022) and Young Scientists Prize of Chinese Society of Electrochemistry (2021), and was selected into National High-Level Talents Program (2025), Xiaomi Young Talents Program (2024), Beijing Municipal Distinguished Young Scholars Program (2022) and National Program for Distinguished Overseas Young Scholars (2019). He is a senior member of Chinese Chemical Society (2025) and a member of Rare Earth Energy Materials Professional Committee, Chinese Society of Rare Earths (2024).
