Biography

Terry grew up in the UK, and received his MChem degree from the University of Bath in 2011. He then moved to Melbourne, Australia, where he conducted his PhD research with Prof. Cameron Jones at Monash University, utilizing heavier tetrylenes in catalysis and exploring low-valent group 14 chemistry more broadly. During this time, he also spent four months at the University of Oxford, working with Prof. Simon Aldridge. He then relocated to Berlin as a UniCat Postdoctoral Fellow with Prof. Matthias Driess. In late 2019, Terry started his independent research career at the TU Munich, supported by a Liebig Fellowship of the FCI. Here his fascination regarding the synergistic reactivity between low-valent main group ligands, such as gallylenes and stannylenes, and low-valent first row transition metals is a major point of investigation. This aims to define a new sub-field in cooperative catalysis utilizing earth-abundant elements. In a similar vein, his team is also developing catalysts based upon the highly abundant s-block metals, Mg and Ca, targeting processes akin to transition metal catalysis such as hydroformylation. Finally, they also explore low-valent phosphorous chemistry, utilized as platforms for multi-metallic systems which can similarly be utilized in catalysis. Taken as a whole, his research looks towards systems and transformations which can displace high waste, un-sustainable chemical processes relied on in both academia and industry today.

Since establishing his independent research group in Munich, Terry has been awarded the Liebig Stipendium of the FCI (2019), three Independent Research grants from the DFG (2021, 2023, 2025), the Exploration Grant of the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation (2022), as well as an ERC Starting Grant (2022). He was also the recipient of the 2022 Wöhler-BASF-Nachwuchs Preis of the GDCh, the 2023 ADUC Preis, the 2024 Otto-Röhm-Gedächtnispreis, and most recently the Ersnt Haage Prize of the MPI for Chemical Energy Conversion.
