This special issue focuses on recent advances in multimodal imaging technologies and integrated analytical workflows that combine complementary imaging modalities to achieve enhanced spatial resolution, chemical sensitivity, structural interpretation and functional characterisation of complex samples.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Integration of mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) with optical, fluorescence, electron, magnetic resonance, nuclear, ultrasound, X-ray or vibrational imaging modalities (Raman and infrared (IR) spectroscopy)
  • Correlative and spatial multi-omics imaging approaches
  • Single-cell and subcellular multimodal imaging
  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning for multimodal image fusion, co-registration, segmentation and interpretation
  • Image-guided molecular profiling and spatial biology
  • Ion mobility-enabled imaging and multidimensional imaging strategies
  • 3D, time-resolved, and dynamic imaging methods
  • Advanced sample preparation, labeling, tissue expansion methods for multimodal analysis
  • Clinical, pharmaceutical, neuroscience, cancer, immunology, environmental, and developmental biology applications
  • Novel instrumentation, computational pipelines, and data standards for multimodal imaging
  • Quantitative imaging and standardization
  • Open-source software tools and community-driven data resources.

The collection welcomes original research articles, methods, perspectives, and reviews that advance the development or application of multimodal imaging technologies.
