Structure and conductivity of an Li4SiO4–Li2SO4 solid solution phase

Abstract

In the system Li4SiO4–Li2SO4, phase-diagram studies show the existence of a narrow range of stable γ solid solutions, Li4 – 2x(Si1 –xSx)O4: 0.30 < x < 0.045. These have high Li+ ion conductivity with maximum values for x≈ 0.40 of 1.32 × 10–6 S cm–1 at 25 °C, rising to 8.5 × 10–3 S cm–1 at 300 °C and an activation energy of 0.80 eV. The γ solid solutions are structurally related to orthorhombic γ-Li3PO4 and contain interstitial Li+ ions; for x= 0.40, a= 6.187(2)Å, b= 10.621(3)Å, c= 5.008(3)Å.
