Synthesis, structural assessment and reaction chemistry of [NH4]2[U2O4(O2)3(H2O)2]·4H2O containing η2- and σ:σ-bonded peroxides

Abstract

The compound [NH4]2[U2O4(O2)3(H2O)2]·4H2O has been synthesised from the reaction of UO3·4H2O with H2O2 in an ammoniacal medium (pH 8–9), and characterised by chemical analysis and vibrational spectroscopy. Infrared and laser-Raman spectroscopy indicates both chelated and bridging peroxides. In aqueous solution the complex reacts with SO2(g), CO2(g) and NO2(g) to produce [UO2(O2)]·4H2O as an intermediate, and a sulfato-, a carbonato- and presumably a nitrato-complex, respectively, of UO22+ as the final products.
