Chinese Chemical Society long-term partner in advancing chemistry says RSC CEO Richard Pike

The Royal Society of Chemistry sees the Chinese Chemical Society as a long-term partner in advancing chemistry, with many years of collaboration ahead, said the RSC chief executive Dr Richard Pike.

Dr Pike was speaking in the Chinese People's Republic at the opening ceremony of the Chinese Chemical Society's 25th congress in Chang Chun.

He told delegates: "It's a great pleasure to be here in Chang Chun, as a representative of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and I want to thank President Bai and the organising committee for inviting me to participate.

"In this, the 25th Congress of the Chinese Chemical Society, there is an extraordinary range of topics being addressed, of truly global significance, from energy to the environment and life sciences, as well as the fundamental contributions from inorganic, organic, physical and analytical chemistry.

"The Royal Society of Chemistry, through its publishing and conferencing activities, has long recognised the quality of Chinese chemical science, and there are three key aspects to our relationship.

"Firstly, China is an important country in buying Royal Society of Chemistry journals, books and databases. Secondly, China is becoming a key country for authors in Royal Society of Chemistry journals, and thirdly, to reflect this, we are actively seeking more referees for papers and more members of editorial boards."

He said that collectively, both the Royal Society of Chemistry and Chinese Chemical Society were keen to ensure the quality of Chinese chemical sciences is fully exposed to global science networks.

"We hope that by establishing a closer working relationship both sets of members will benefit and that the science of chemistry will be promoted to the advantage of everyone.

"As a sign of our wish to collaborate, the Royal Society of Chemistry has opened an office close to the Chinese Chemical Society's own office in Beijing, and we have agreed to sponsor two Chinese Chemical Society prizes in the areas of energy and sustainability, and to run a joint science seminar every two years, with the first one being in China in late 2006 or early 2007."
