Inspiration to young scientists and shining example in responsible care win industry awards

A Bradford based chemist and a County Durham based company have both scooped major awards given by the chemical industry to recognise excellence in different fields. 

Senior chemist and rugby enthusiast Rebecca Farnell - of Ciba Speciality Chemicals, Bradford - won the Young Ambassador category at the Chemical Industry Awards - after being selected by a judging panel including a representative from the RSC.

The judges were looking for evidence that the nominees had been instrumental in encouraging young people to take an active interest in chemistry and its applications.

They were impressed with Rebecca's record of working with the Young Person's Network, in which she promotes the excitement of the chemical industry to schools. She also regularly arranges training for network members.

RSC chief executive Dr Richard Pike said: "Rebecca is a shining light to other young people in the chemical industry.

"The RSC was very impressed by her efforts to inspire those around her."

Also celebrating were Newton Ayecliffe based Hydro Polymers Ltd, who won the RSC-sponsored Responsible Care Award.

In this category the judges looked for the chemical industry site that demonstrated excellence in implementing its health, safety and environment policies in the last year.

Dr Pike said: "Hydro Polymers Ltd are leading the way in how they handle their responsibilities in these areas.

"The RSC is proud to sponsor the Responsible Care Award, and we offer our warm congratulations to everyone at Hydro Polymers."

Site manager Bill Wood collected the award from RSC Director of Science and Technology Rodney Townsend.

RSC President Simon Campbell also received the Individual Achievement Award for creating the most positive overall impact on the industry in the past 12 months. 

Dr Campbell's outstanding lifetime contribution to chemical sciences was also instrumental in his winning the award.
