RSC welcomes £140 million funding for science teaching
The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) welcomes the government's announcement on funding, especially if this helps teachers to communicate the excitement of science to their pupils.
An RSC statement said:
"The support for continuing professional development is a step in the right direction, as is the golden hello for teachers who retrain in the sciences - why not tackle the crisis in recruitment head-on, and allow market forces to prevail, by making this a permanent pay increase?
"Inspiring science lessons also require modern, well-equipped school laboratories. However, RSC research recently revealed that 65% of school science laboratories were, at best, of a basic standard, with 21% considered unsafe or poor.
"We hope that the government can point to an improvement in this situation in their school building programme - otherwise many science teachers will be facing an uphill struggle."
