Chemists will help meet European energy targets, says Richard Pike

Chemical scientists can rise to the challenges set by European energy targets, says the chief executive of the Royal Society of Chemistry in the introduction to an important report just published.

Richard Pike says in the foreword to Chemistry and Energy, published by EuCheMS: "Energy is a vital part of a our daily lives. Without it we cannot heat our homes, power our businesses or use transport."

Dr Pike chaired a EuCheMS working party on Chemistry and Energy, the deliberations of which led to the report.

"This timely report outlines how the chemical sciences can provide the technologies, infrastructure and skills needed to meet the ambitious energy targets set out by the European Union.

"Key recommendations of the report include proposals on carbon capture and storage, waste minimisation, renewable energy sources, storage and batteries, nuclear power, public engagement, and effective innovation."

The European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences (EuCheMS) is a non-profit-making organisation, the object of which is the promotion of cooperation between non-profit organisations in those fields across the union. It provides a single powerful voice for chemists. 

There are 50 member societies that represent in total about 150,000 scientists.
