Newsnight science editor hails RSC election efforts

The continuing efforts of the RSC to highlight science's role as a General Election issue were explored by Susan Watts, the experienced science editor of BBC's Newsnight, in a blog post on the programme's website.

The post notes RSC Chief Executive Dr Richard Pike's assertion that "science has yet to become the election issue it should". Watts also points out the RSC's efforts to ease scientists' nerves about the "relative silence about [the proposed £600m cuts to the science budget] during the campaign."

Watts chaired decisively the RSC-organised debate between the main three parties' science representatives in the House of Commons earlier this year.

In Portcullis House in March, BIS Science Minister Lord Drayson, Conservative shadow science minister Adam Afriyie and Liberal Democrat science spokesman Dr Evan Harris debated fiercely the future of science in the UK.
