Recognising teaching skills with a new chartered mark
Through the Chartered Chemist (CChem) and Chartered Scientist (CSci) designations, we recognise the professional achievements of chemical scientists in a range of careers. Earlier this year, we obtained a licence to award Chartered Science Teacher (CSciTeach) status, and are now accepting applications.
So why become a chartered science teacher?
CSciTeach recognises the unique combination of skills, knowledge, understanding and expertise that is required in the practice and advancement of science teaching and learning. It shows that, as a teacher, you are dedicated to making an impact on your students’ learning, reflect on teaching methods and practices, and have made a commitment to continuing professional development.
James Barker, Associate Professor at Kingston University and the first RSC member to obtain CSciTeach status through our new scheme, says: “CSciTeach has enabled me to reflect on my professional development and the impact on my effectiveness as a lecturer.
"It is an acknowledgement of my efforts to improve teaching and learning and recognition that good teaching can be informed by research and innovation. I hope CSciTeach will help raise the status of the profession at all levels, from science in primary schools to university level teaching.”
If you are interested in applying, you should meet five main criteria. If you are a teacher and gained CChem or CSci status while teaching, then you can apply through a streamlined process.
