Analysing Scottish exam results
Thousands of pupils across Scotland have received their results in national examinations.
Our president, Professor Sir John Holman, says: "I taught chemistry to school students of all ages for many years, so I’ve seen first-hand the hard work and determination needed to reach the milestones thousands of pupils across Scotland have achieved.
"Congratulations to all the students celebrating your chemistry results – and to your inspirational teachers – and I wish you the very best of luck with the exciting opportunities you have ahead."
2016 Scottish results in figures
- The chemistry Advanced Higher continues to be the second most popular qualification at that level. A total of 2,614 pupils sat the chemistry exam this year
- The percentage of pupils achieving A–C grade was 83%, which is 3% up on 2015
- 5.1% of Higher examinations were taken in Higher chemistry, which is down for the second year running from 6.0% in 2014
- The total number of entries for chemistry Higher this year is 10,077, down from 11,418 in 2014
Disappointing fall
Professor Sir John Holman adds: "It is disappointing that the overall number of students taking the Scottish Higher chemistry exam has fallen for the second year in a row.
"While we are aware that Scottish school qualifications are still navigating a period of change, I am concerned at this apparent trend and will work with our colleagues in Scotland to better understand and address the causes, so that all young people have the opportunity to develop their talents in chemistry."
