Introducing our new Surface Coatings Interest Group
The Surface Coatings Interest Group is the latest addition to our range of member networks. These interest groups are member driven and exist to benefit our members and the wider chemical science community, in line with our strategy and charter.
Coatings have been part of our lives at the very least since humans first began the practice of cave paintings. Their use has evolved into diverse and exciting technologies incorporating paints, inks, adhesives, elastomers and sealants. The range of applications of surface coating chemistry is continually expanding, from protection for spacecraft to children’s face paints.
The surface coatings industry encompasses many different areas of chemistry, including polymers, nanotechnology, materials science, colour, rheology and corrosion, to name but a few.
The new surface coatings interest group provides a network for members, at any stage of their career, with an interest in chemistry and natural sciences applied to surface coatings. Group members represent many different aspects of the industry, from basic research and raw materials development through to formulation and applications research.
Head of membership David Barr says, “the Surface Coatings Interest Group fits well with the range of other groups represented by our networks and will offer our members valuable opportunities to develop their knowledge of this important area of chemical science.”
The group welcomes students, academics and new entrants to the industry, and includes members with roles in general management, sales and technical services, consultancy, training and recruitment, and regulations and testing.
The group will be organising technical, educational and networking events to help coatings chemists make connections and exchange ideas. These will be of particular benefit to early career chemists, who can learn from the experience of established coatings industry professionals.
Group Chair Jonathan Bourne says, “This initiative aims to complement the activities of other coatings related industry groups by reaching out to younger people at earlier stages in their career. The coatings industry offers interesting and varied experience that integrates knowledge across many aspects of the chemicals industry.”
A launch event for the group is taking place on 15 March at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Nottingham.
