Celebrating women in science with #Iamachemist
We joined forces with the Institute of Physics to celebrate women working in the chemical and physical sciences for the UN’s International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
The UN declared 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science in 2015, in order to address the gender gap that exists in scientific professions across the world.
In the week leading up to the day, we asked women working in the chemical sciences to tweet a selfie and a short description of what they do using #Iamachemist, while the Institute of Physics encouraged female physicists to use #Iamaphysicist. We also asked those tweeting to nominate their friends and colleagues to join the campaign, in an effort to showcase and celebrate as many women in chemistry as possible.
284 women took part, using #Iamachemist to share photos of themselves at work, at conferences, spending time with their family and friends, or enjoying a variety of hobbies.
The resulting campaign is a wonderfully diverse collection of people and careers in the chemical sciences. Check out the hashtag on Twitter and use our list of everyone that took part to find some inspirational chemists to follow. We've made everyone who shared their stories into the two montages below – take a look and see if you can spot yourself and your friends.
Thank you to everyone who took part!
