No deal after Netherlands negotiation
Our Commercial Director, Dan Dyer, explains that following further rounds of discussion and exploration of a range of options, the VSNU consortium in the Netherlands has indicated they are unwilling to accept any of the offers open to them.
The negotiation between the VSNU and the Royal Society of Chemistry has not just been about access to our journals content – it is about an agreement that makes the transition to Open Access sustainable. It is disappointing that the offers we have presented were rejected, however, we recognise that the chemistry community in the Netherlands values our content and we remain hopeful that a future deal is still possible.
Explaining “Read & Publish”
- Read & Publish deals are not based on historic spend on subscriptions.
- The Read & Publish model includes the publishing output of an institution and a reading fee for the paywalled content.
- We have been through similar scenarios with other customers and consortia where there was an acknowledgment of the need to invest in OA, especially for high quality content and service.
The Royal Society of Chemistry has led the way with the Read & Publish model. We were the first to reach such an agreement with the Max Planck Society and our transparent model clearly outlines how much is paid for publishing OA and how much is for reading. We have more than 30 customers worldwide publishing OA and reading our journals within a Read & Publish agreement.
