Royal Society of Chemistry shines at Memcom awards
We’re proud to report that we have had some incredible results at this year’s Memcom awards, which recognise excellence in professional membership, bringing together professional bodies, associations, charities and the wider not-for-profit sector.
The Memcom awards “recognise the creativity and hard work driving up the standards of the membership sector and shine a light on the organisations that are increasing value for their profession as well as wider society”.

In the run-up to COP26 last year we teamed up with Professor Saiful Islam and science filmmaker Fran Scott to set a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for the highest voltage from a fruit battery.
We used 2,923 lemons to generate an astonishing 2,307.8 volts, which smashed the previous world record of 1,521 volts, and launched a battery-powered go-kart race run by the Blair Project in Manchester. The electrifying feat was designed to highlight the importance of energy storage and the need for new innovations for a zero-carbon world against the backdrop of the COP26 Climate Change Summit.

Best Sustainability Initiative – Highly Commended
As part of our ongoing sustainability work on Polymers in Liquid Formulations, our research highlighted the potential environmental issues resulting from the UK’s 50 million litre paint stash, with unused tins and pots slowly going to waste in sheds and garages around the country. That equates to households across the UK stockpiling enough paint to coat the Forth Rail Bridge 212 times.
