Community chemistry at Fab Lab Coventry
175 minutes for chemistry: Chemistry Week
Our members teamed up with students from Coventry University to run a series of free community events at Fab Lab Coventry for Chemistry Week 2016.
The activities aimed to engage primary school students aged 7-11 years, as well as their parents, with everyday science and chemistry. Visitors could take part in hands-on experiments investigating topics such as hydrogels, the acidity of fruits and colour chemistry. Around 80 people attended the sessions, which were held on the evening of Wednesday 23 November and during the day on Saturday 26 November.
Feedback from the events was incredibly positive with both children and parents appreciating the chance to design the experiments themselves and recognising that they could do simple chemistry experiments with everyday household items. One visitor commented βit was super informative and interesting β a great way to learn about chemistry. Hands on is so much better!β
175 minutes for chemistry
As the oldest chemical society in the world, we celebrated our 175th anniversary in 2016. We wanted to mark this milestone by recognising the important contributions our community makes to the chemical sciences. We asked our members and supporters to dedicate 175 minutes to chemistry in 2016 and share their stories with us. We featured these stories throughout the year on our website, in print in RSC News, and on social media using #time4chem.
