Creating chemistry across India
175 minutes for chemistry
Local sections of the Royal Society of Chemistry play a significant role in promoting and advancing chemical science across the world.
Our local sections are member networks within a region, which conduct activities in education, outreach and developing positive attitudes about chemical sciences in society.
The Royal Society of Chemistry has over 60 local sections across the UK and the rest of the world. 35 local sections are based in the UK and Ireland, with five local sections in India – North India (Delhi), South India (Chennai), East India (Kolkata), West India (Mumbai) and Deccan (Hyderabad).
Each local section is run by a committee of volunteers who help direct the annual programme of events. These events include scientific lectures, public lectures, school activities and social events.
Members can be part of local section activities in their respective region by submitting ideas and suggestions for meetings or joining the committee.
Each local section has a committee which meets several times a year to discuss ideas and initiatives that meet the needs of local members.
300 students and college teachers trained in rural Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh
The Royal Society of Chemistry’s West India local section organised two one-day workshops comprised of a series of lectures and training workshops for over 300 college teachers and students at North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon and Raipur, Chhattisgarh.
These workshops provided an opportunity for attending teachers and students to learn more about the latest advances in chemistry and chemical technology.
Participants were also briefed on various Royal Society of Chemistry online resources and our role in promoting science education and sharing knowledge across the chemical science community.
National Conference on Chemical Sciences organised in rural Maharashtra
RSC West India (RSC-WIS) Local Section conducted a two day National Conference on Chemical Science: Emerging Scenario and Challenges at Sant Gadge Baba University in Amravati, Maharashtra.
The conference was aimed at promoting and teaching conceptual aspects of Green and Sustainable Chemistry to undergraduate and graduate students in the western Vidarbha region.
Students interacted with leading Indian scientists from eminent institutions across the country.
Spectroscopy workshop in Mumbai
Over 150 graduate and post-graduate students attended a workshop on Bioinorganic Chemistry and Spectroscopy at VG Vaze college in Mumbai. RSC West Local Section members developed the programme and conducted the workshops.
Chemistry demonstration for school children
RSC West India (RSC-WIS) Local Section also conducted a Basic Chemistry demonstration for 500 school children at an inter-school event in Nagpur, Maharashtra.
School teachers get hands-on lab experience
The Royal Society of Chemistry’s India Deccan Local Section (RSC-IDLS) conducted two one-day seminars on ‘Laboratory Experience in Chemistry’ for over 75 Government School Science Teachers in April 2016. The seminars were organised at Kamalapur, Telangana and Mukkamala village, Andhra Pradesh, India. The seminars were well-received and created interest amongst science teachers on chemistry experiments. The local section also donated a laboratory kit for school teachers and a manual for conducting chemistry experiments in their schools for the benefit of students.
School students visit a pharma company
Students from Class X and Class XII had a unique opportunity to visit a pharmaceutical company to learn about the drugs and medicine under the Inquisitive Science Forum programme held in Hyderabad during April 2016.
Enthusiastic students posed a lot of queries on chemistry and related areas during their interaction with scientists from the company as well as researchers from academia during the visit. The programme, organised by Deccan Local Section, included fun-filled chemistry quizzes and problem-solving puzzles for students.
Workshops on Frontier Materials and Applied Spectroscopy
RSC’s South India Local Section conducted a one day workshop on Frontier materials at Avinashilingam University, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu in February 2016 for post-graduate and Ph.D. students.
Scientists spoke on a wide range of topics such as advances in Li battery materials, current trends in Nano Structured materials, Nano structuring of graphene Nano assemblies and Polymer Nano particles in assisted drug delivery.
Seminar on Applied Spectroscopy
A two-day seminar on Applied Spectroscopy was held for research scholars and university faculty members at Vels University, Chennai, Tamil Nadu in March 2016. Oral and poster presentations were also held for under-graduate and post-graduate students at the university.
Lecture on New Generation Interlocked Molecular Systems at IISER
The Royal Society of Chemistry’s East India Local section organised a scientific lecture on "A New Generation Interlocked Molecular Systems" at IISER, Kolkata.
Dr. Pradyut Ghosh of the Indian Association for Cultivation of Science, Kolkata, delivered a lecture on new developments in this field and its applications. The lecture received a good response from the audience comprising students, research scholars and faculty at IISER Kolkata.
RSC’s India East Local Section conducts Inter-School essay competition in Kolkata, West Bengal
The Royal Society of Chemistry’s East India Local Section (EIS) organised an Inter-School essay competition with over 350 students from 41 schools across Kolkata, West Bengal participating.
International workshop on ‘Chemistry for Tomorrow’s World’
The Royal Society of Chemistry’s North India Local Section organised an international workshop on ‘Chemistry for Tomorrow’s World’ in association with the Green Chemistry Network Centre-University of Delhi, Manav Rachna University- Faridabad, Shiv Nadar University-Greater Noida. The workshop was well attended by over 100 participants from research laboratories, Universities, Industries and R & D Institutions.
175 minutes for chemistry
As the oldest chemical society in the world, we celebrated our 175th anniversary in 2016. We wanted to mark this milestone by recognising the important contributions our community makes to the chemical sciences. We asked our members and supporters to dedicate 175 minutes to chemistry in 2016 and share their stories with us. We featured these stories throughout the year on our website, in print in RSC News, and on social media using #time4chem.
