Environmental Science Showcase
Chemistry Week
Zoë Fleming, Chair of the RSC Environmental Chemistry Group, organised the "Into the environment lab" at the UnEarthed NERC Environmental Science Showcase in Edinburgh, 17–20 November.
We have run several outreach activities over the last few years, and for the second time we participated in the large NERC (Natural Environment Research Council) environmental science showcases. We ran soil and water testing activities, showcased a variety of low-cost air quality sensors, demonstrated an ocean acidification experiment using dry ice and even had a LEGO workshop talking about microbial degradation of paracetamol in the environment.
A group of 14 environmental chemists and local chemistry and environmental science volunteers worked on the stall over the four days. A good time was had by all and we hope to have inspired some of the future generation of scientists and shown them how chemistry can tackle the world’s environmental challenges.

Chemistry Week
Chemistry Week is an annual celebration of the chemical sciences, centred around our members sharing their passion with public audiences. In 2017 it took place from 20–26 November, and the theme was 'Global Science'. Members were able to apply for grants from our Outreach Fund to organise activities.
